Folinic acid (also known as leucovorin or 5-formyl-tetrahydrofolate) is a biologically active form of folate that bypasses several steps of folic acid metabolism. It is used in conventional medicine to help prevent or correct folate deficiency, support red blood cell formation, and โ€œrescueโ€ healthy cells during certain drug therapies that interfere with folate pathways. More broadly, folinic acid may help support healthy methylation and homocysteine balance, DNA synthesis and repair, nervous system function, and overall cellular energy and detoxification processes.
