Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil, is an essential oil that comes from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a tree native to Australia. Tea tree oil has been used as a traditional medicine for centuries due to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and antifungal properties. Tea tree oil contains several compounds, one being terpinen-4-ol, which has been shown to kill certain bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Tea tree oil may be used to help fight acne, promote healthy hair, control dandruff, improve circulation, support nail and skin health, treat nail fungus, relieve symptoms of athlete’s foot, and decrease inflammation.
