Urea is most commonly recognized as the nitrogen-carrying compound generated in the liver through the metabolism of amino acids. Medically, urea is typically used in a compounding pharmacy in topical formulations to soften skin and nails. It has also been used internally in the treatment of cancer, specifically cancers the either originate in or have metastasized to the liver. When used in this way it is most commonly combined with creatine.
